The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Summer Conference which took place in Baltimore, Maryland was also the site for The Federal Highway Administration's & Federal Transit Administration's Transportation Planning Excellence Awards, Co-sponsored by the American Planning Association. The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding initiatives across the country to develop, plan, and implement innovative transportation planning practices. Awards were granted to projects, processes, and groups that have made outstanding contributions to the field of transportation planning. An independent panel of judges selected the award winners, using the following criteria: innovation; community and public involvement; partnerships and collaboration; multimodalism; equity; sustainability; demonstrated results/effectiveness/replication/transferability; and category-specific considerations. The Smart Transportation Guidebook project joins two State Departments of Transportation together with a bi-state Metropolitan Planning Organization to prepare a common set of planning tools and design guidelines that can be used throughout both states. Led by PennDOT Secretary Allen Biehler and former NJDOT Commissioner Jack Lettiere and current Commissioner Kris Kolluri, this project represents an unusual and successful collaboration, which included two Federal Highway Administration regional offices as well. The Smart Transportation Guidebook won in the category of Transportation and Land Use Integration. .
