May 8, 2007 — Fog Warning System Achieves National Recognition!

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and Orth-Rodgers & Associates, Inc. submitted the Fog Detection, Traveler Information, and Dynamic Traffic Control System Project (also referred to as the Fog Warning System) to the American Council of Engineering Companies for its 2007 Engineering in Excellence Awards Competition. The Fog Warning System received a National Finalist Recognition in the Special Projects Category at a ceremony held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, May 8th, 2007.

This project was eligible for submission on the National Level of ACEC because of the first place award it received from the ACEC Pennsylvania organization at the Diamond Awards Banquet in February of this year.

The project was also submitted to the Federal Highway Administration’s 2006 Excellence in Highway Design Awards Competition and received a Merit Award in the Intelligent Transportation Systems Category.

The project was developed in response to a fog-induced multiple fatal crash on the Turnpike in 2003. In order to advance the project as quickly as possible, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission engaged Orth-Rodgers & Associates in an innovative Design-Build agreement. Orth-Rodgers & Associates was responsible for plans development, project management, hiring the software developer and integrator, hiring the contractor, and serving as the construction manager.
