US 202, Section 500
The Markley Street Improvement Project

Orth-Rodgers & Associates, Inc. (ORA) was hired by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Engineering District 6 to complete Final Design activities on the Section of US 202 from just south of Main street to Johnson Highway in the Borough of Norristown.

Work on the project started in late Fall of 2007 with the Environmental Clearance and is expected to be under construction by Spring of 2011. The estimated construction cost is approximately $18 million.

The roadway features on this project include:

  • 4-lane curbed roadway with two lanes in each direction from Main St. to Marshall St.
  • 4-lane curbed roadway with two southbound lanes, one northbound lane and a center turn lane from Marshall St. to James St.
  • 3-lane curbed roadway with two travel lanes and a center turn land from James St. to Johnson Highway.
  • 3-lane curbed roadway with two travel lanes and a center turn lane for the Johnson Highway section from Markley St. to Powell St.
  • Inclusion of parking bays and pedestrian bump-outs
  • Minor improvements to all intersections along roadways.
  • Realignment of Coolidge Blvd. intersection.
  • Quality of life improvements through Smart Transportation solutions.
  • Transfer of roadway ownership & maintenance from the Borough to PennDOT.

The Bridge and Structural Features include:

  • Replacement of the U.S. Route 202  bridge over Stony Creek near Airy St.
  • Rehabilitation of Main St. and Elm St. stone arch bridges.
