S.R. 0061, SECTION DLS
PRECAST BOX CULVERT DESIGN

Orth-Rodgers & Associates, Inc. (ORA) was retained by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) for the preliminary engineering, environmental studies, and final design of S.R. 0061 Section DLS in Schuylkill County. The existing S.R. 0061 roadway was being widened to add a jughandle ramp to alleviate congestion and safety concerns at the S.R. 0061/S.R. 0895/T-715 intersection.

This widening required the enhancement of an existing stream crossing. ORA wasresponsible for the design of a new precast box culvert to replace the existing 48” reinforced concrete pipe which services a small unnamed tributary of the Little Schuylkill River under S.R. 0061. Due to the roadway improvements the upstream side of the stream required realignment to enhance the service to the stream.

This realignment involved extensive coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Army Corps of Engineers for approval of the Joint Permit Application for the new box culvert and stream relocation plans. ORA develop staged construction plans under the constraints of right-of-way and maintenance and protection of traffic for the installation of the new culvert to facilitate the reconstruction of S.R. 0061 while maintaining the flow of traffic through the project area. The final design consisted of a 205’-0” long, 7’-6” wide by 5’-0” high precast box culvert with cast-in-place headwalls and wingwalls at each end. ORA also provided a detailed review of the precast culvert shop drawings as well as construction consultation throughout the project.
