Smart Transportation Solutions For Communities in New Jersey and Pennsylvannia

Orth-Rodgers & Associates, Inc. (ORA), with Brown & Keener Bressi Urban Design as its subconsultant, is currently under contract with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) to prepare Smart Transportation Solutions for Communities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This study will recommend context-sensitive standards for all classifications of roadways in all land use contexts. This project is intended to provide clear guidelines for creating new “main streets” or other walkable roadways in communities that are planned using smart growth principles. The template establishes a process to conduct Smart Growth Corridor Studies and demonstrates how to use contextsensitive design elements to ensure the vision of the corridor’s communities is intelligently maintained. This project is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and is seen as having potential application to the entirety of both states.

The study team has been coordinating with an Engineering Committee comprised of both planners and designers from PennDOT and NJDOT, as well as a Stakeholders Group consisting of local officials and planners from every county in the DVRPC area.
